2016 Sustainability Report

Our vision is to create a global culture of health, where our people and their families become responsible for their individual well-being through informed, active participation in health and wellness activities.

Supporting this vision is our goal to implement wellness programs at 100 percent of our facilities by 2020. In 2016, 73 percent of our reporting locations with 50 or more employees had a wellness program.

We have encouraged and supported the creation of local wellness programs for almost 20 years to:

  • Foster greater employee engagement in the process;
  • Provide a mechanism for active disease management;
  • Reduce health care costs in the United States;
  • Reduce the incidence of chronic diseases among our people;
  • Lower productivity costs;
  • Provide ways for our people’s families to become involved and educated;
  • Keep our people healthy, productive and at work; and
  • Improve quality of life after retirement.

Our approach to wellness is based on our Four Wellness Absolutes—nutrition, exercise, health screenings and mindfulness—that research identified as key to our people’s overall well-being. Every wellness program and tool we offer addresses one or more of these absolutes to help our people benefit from lifestyle improvements.

In 2016, we launched a year-long focus on diabetes education. We employed lunch-and-learn sessions, posters and other communications to help our employees better understand the symptoms of this disease and how to prevent it. We will continue the program in 2017 with a focus on cancer.

Each of our sites is expected to have a wellness committee and wellness champion to communicate our wellness messages and implement the various global, regional and local programs. The corporate PPG Wellness Council sets the overall strategy and tracks our progress globally. In 2016, we also added a wellness subcommittee to our corporate Sustainability Committee.

Guiding our sites to wellness excellence and recognizing superior performance is a suite of tools consisting of the following:

  • Wellness Catalog: This collection of wellness programs offered at our sites around the world allows our people to share successful ideas and describe how best to implement them. The catalog features sections for each of the Four Wellness Absolutes.
  • Wellness Scorecard: Our sites can register their wellness activities and track progress over time using the scorecard. A point value is assigned for each wellness program offered, with some programs receiving extra points for higher participation rates.
  • Wellness Awards: These annual awards are based on the scorecard points a site earns in each calendar year.

PPG employees take 65 million steps toward good health

Some PPG employees took a walk in 2016…far enough to go around the Earth’s equator and then some.

The 177 employees from 13 U.S. locations who participated in the pilot of the March to May (M2M) Challenge walked more than 65 million collective steps in three months. An average of 40 percent of participants exceeded the goal of 50,000 steps per week.

The Dover, Delaware, location logged the most total steps (16,330,251), while participants based in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, achieved the highest average steps per person (847,973).

Getting healthy through teamwork in Russia

More than 70 employees from our sites in Moscow and Kolomna, Russia, celebrated 2016 PPG Global Wellness Day with morning exercises, healthy snacks and meals and a timed competition that required teammates to work together to achieve their goals.

As part of the competition, employees were grouped into six teams that each participated in rock climbing, archery and paintball games. These activities gave employees the opportunity to stretch their physical capabilities and strengthen their relationships with colleagues through problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration.

PPG Mexico employees bring home the medals

Fifty employees from PPG Mexico transformed into athletes to compete for the third year in the World Corporate Games.

PPG Mexico covered registration fees and training- and travel-related expenses for the athletes, who were selected to represent PPG based on their skills in basketball, volleyball, ping pong, swimming, running or triathlons. The athletes earned six medals during the 2016 games, up from two the previous year.

Ohio locations provide easy access to mammograms

For 15 years, our Cleveland and Strongsville, Ohio, locations provided free onsite mammograms to employees over the age of 45 through a mobile mammography unit. In 2016, the locations partnered with a local hospital to set up a private onsite exam room to increase comfort and ease of access. More than 35 percent of eligible female employees participated, with three cases of early breast cancer detected.
